Dreams Deferred
I wrote the following poem for my daughter, Crystal, but feel the need to repost it tonight for me. Hope you don’t mind the repost. —Lots of love, C.
Dreams Deferred
What happens to our dreams deferred?
Unacted upon desires that are seldom heard . . .
Do they wash away with the crimson tide . . .
By the sands of time which can’t be defied?
What happens to our dreams alas. . .
which we sadly allow to simply pass. . .
or hold at bay for a better day
Do they await our return or simply fade away?
What happens when we put our dreams on a shelf?
Do they wait patiently for us to find ourselves
Or do they float away to an unknown dreamland
Where dreams deferred converge and reemerge once again . . .
In the soul of another child-like spirit . .
with the heart to reclaim our neglected dream’s merit
Who will take the forsaken dream and caress its face
And abandon not its saving grace
Allow not our dreams to become deferred
Unnurtured; Seldom talked to; Barely heard. . .
For without our love, passion, and concern
Our dream will whither; thus our heart will burn and yearn. . .
Yet the dream will one day find another
Who will embrace that dream like a new found lover
And the dream will lovingly reciprocate
But sadly for us, it will be too late;
Yet to ease our minds, we will call it fate.

Today I wish I could just simply go
To a private beach where the warm winds blow
To a place where the seagulls fly free in the air
Where tranquil anonymity is everwhere
I’d love to gaze at the moon by the sea
Enhale the vast beauty of eternity
Make love to a stranger on the white sands of time
Laugh with the children and sing children’s rhymes
Paint a picture of love on a landscape of peace
Where people feel love from the west to far east
Gaze at the sunrise while laying on the grass
Completely nude; as the wind softly kisses my ass
Alas, I’m not in that magical place by the sea
But it’s magical to temporarily escape from normality
Where I’m at peace with all; and all is free
The daydream is over; back to reality

When the Universe is Still

In the darkest middle of the night
when you lie still in your bed
What thoughts come in your mind
What floats inside your head?
In the wee hours of the morning…
when your universe is still
What emotions cross your path
Tell me what is it you feel?
As the moon smiles upon your face
through the window of your heart
What stories do your soul retrace
Do you play the leading part?
Have you ever had a dream that lasts
through nights that never ends?
The dream that reinvents the past;
Rearranging fate as destiny ascends?
Have you ever dreamth of loveones gone
As if they were still with us alive?
The vivid dream of life forgone unknown
Where all remain; and all survive?
Do the departed speak to you in dreams?
Do they laugh with you in love and rejoyce?
Or do they caution you of life yet unseen;
A distant warning to change life’s course
Have you ever dreamth alternate versions
of what your life would be . . .
if you could rewrite; redraft the reversion
of your choices that have shaped all destiny?
As the stars look down upon your being
Through the window of your soul
What motion picture are the stars seeing;
Do you play the leading role?
Do you hold the key to your dreams?
Perhaps misplaced the key without the will to look?
Have you gave the key away it seems?
A supporting character in another’s dream book?
Whatever floats into your dreams or conscious
When your universe is still
Is the key to finding the missing key
Observe closely; it shall be revealed.
